Literally felt like I was eating hot garbage and enjoying it. And it blew my mind.
I don't even know what I ordered. I just asked for one of those with fries. I was more that ok with a new combination of flavors that came and the fries really balanced it out.
The girls working that night were mighty nice and they even Allowed me to pretend I was a Steelers fan while the MNF game was on.
This place was quite a Pittsburgh experience. -

It's a known fact that I love Primanti's. One of my finest Yelp masterpieces is the review I left for their Shadyside location at the tender age of 17. They've since put another location in Dayton, OH that I frequented often enough to warrant house hunting in the area. (Well, kind of - now apparently they're not opening back and I'll have to drive to Indy!) I'm a huge advocate for everyone trying the divine combination of a capicola, egg, cheese, onion sandwich (no tomato!) at least once in their life. I'm probably on par with many Pittsburgh residents regarding the amount of times I've dove head first into one of these delicious monstrosities.
And yet, somehow, I had never visited the OG location.
My friend and I were walking through the district looking for a Lemieux jersey when the hunger pangs came on. As he had only been to Pittsburgh twice before, he asked my opinion on what would be best in the area. I am never one to turn down an opportunity to showcase a top 3 favorite sandwich of mine, and Primantis was around the corner. Off we went.
The gentleman manning the small line at the door was pleasant and fun to talk to. The wait wasn't bad as it was an off hour, and the weather was perfect to be hanging outside for a big. We were seated after 10 minutes at a table near the front - perfect for people watching.
In my opinion, the server makes or breaks an experience most meals. Our server was AWFUL. I politely asked if they had mozzarella sticks, and was given a nasty look followed by a curt "our menu is on the wall!" Considering other locations serve them, I didn't think it was a strange question to ask. When we asked her about the beer selection, she lazily pointed to bottled beer selection at the bar and stated that's what she had. Mind you, we were nowhere near eyesight level and sitting on a raised section of the restaurant. We had to get up and walk over. It's unnecessary and really takes from the dining experience if I have to squeeze through other tables to make my way across and figure out what I want to drink - only to walk back to my table to tell my server who really should know what they offer off hand.
I knew exactly what I wanted, but my friend wanted some more feedback on their sandwiches. As a first timer, I didn't think that was too much to ask. Their menu always states that the Pittsburger is their #2 sandwich, but what on earth is their #1!? Our server wasn't exactly helpful or friendly so he wasn't going to ask her. We put in our orders and the food was out to us shortly.
Was the food good? Yes, of course. Primanti's is always delicious. My friend went with the Pittsburgher and was disappointed in the lack of flavor. I personally go insane and add loads of hot sauce so I can't say one way or the other if he was right. Given the serving experience, he may have just put his food on par with it.
I know at Primanti's you go to the register to pay, but there were absolutely no signs as to where to go. We sat there waiting because we needed guidance. Upon realizing we were finished and had no idea of the next step, the server barked at us to go to the back to pay - had we not been messing with turning over the table, she likely would have left us sitting there wondering all day.
The food is good, the history is interesting and fun, but the service is ATROCIOUS. We all know I love my Primanti's, but I'll be steering clear of the Strip location. I like to be treated like a paying customer. -

I've only been to this location, while on vacation here so I can't speak for the other locations but I had a good experience.
The sandwich I got was very good, and enough for two meals (Carnegie).
It's a seat yourself place, and the although it was very busy the service was pretty fast and friendly.
It's a landmark for a reason, so I would have to recommend it to anyone visiting Pittsburgh. -

I was disappointed with the food here. I expected some awesome deli goodness, but the sandwich is made with comically thick untoasted slices of Italian bread and twice as much coleslaw as meat. The meat, in my opinion, tasted no different than the deli meat you'd get at the supermarket.
And don't get your sandwich with fries inside the sandwich. That's just weird. -

We got the ragin Cajun chicken breast sandwich. The seasoning on the chicken breast is SO good!
The sandwich, like all their sandwiches, was stuffed with fries. I think the fries could have done with more salt. As a result, I added hot sauce to my sandwich.
I wasn't a fan of the saurkraut but I know not everyone feels the same way.
The customer service here is amazing and the inside of this joint showcases pictures of famous people from Pittsburgh.
I would not come back again but don't regret going! Not quite sure why it is a big tourist destination either.
